The integration profile of retroviral vectors derived from murine leukemia virus (MLV) exhibits a strong bias for regions flanking transcription start sites (TSS), whereas lentiviral vectors derived from HIV-1 does not exhibit the same preference for integration near transcription start sites, but instead have a preference towards actively transcribed regions.
